The Yale College Internship Program began in 1975 under the directorship of A. Tappan Wilder. The program, which ran in conjunction with Yale Summer Term, placed 25 undergraduates a year in government, business, and media internships during fall or spring term. In 1979 the Yale Summer Program ended, raising questions about the future of the internship program. Martin Ignatius Joseph Griffin, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 13, 1933. He graduated from St. Petersburg High School in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1951, and then attended the University of Pennsylvania. There he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and editor of The Daily Pennsylvanian. In 1955 he received a B.A. with distinction in European history.
